Good going for USC’s Women’s Team (I’ve always had a hard time typing the words “Lady Gamecocks”) who scored a win over Ole Miss.
And fans get a cheer for bringing back their piggy banks, making donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Although I hear about the Komen Foundation all the time, I didn’t know much about them. Reading their website, I learned that Nancy Brinker, Susan Komen’s sister, started the foundation after Susan died of breast cancer.
In 25 years, the foundation has become the “largest grassroots network of survivors and activists.” I also found a link on their site to Charity Navigator, which rates charities on their effectiveness (or lack thereof) in a variety of ways. (And here’s a critique of Charity Navigator’s effectiveness.)
All this leading me to learn that today is Sheryl Crow’s birthday. That caught my eye because I’d read what Crow writes about her diagnosis in the introduction to Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips from skirt! books.
Because it’s Crow’s birthday, Charity Navigator is linking to several breast cancer organizations including Y-ME (which provides support) and the National Breast Cancer Foundation (which provides free mammograms to uninsured women).
