This weekend, Stacey Goode--Five Points’ female barber--is standing by to help you celebrate St. Baldrick’s.
Yes, Stacey (our 24/7 feature in September 2007) and the other barbers at Carolina Barber Shop are giving their time to give people bald heads--to support a good cause.
St. Baldrick’s is a nationwide event to raise funds and awareness for cancer.
Ivan Baughman organizes St. Baldrick’s in Columbia. Last year, the Columbia effort raised more than $17,000, shaving 28 heads, four of
which were women’s.
Ivan emailed some information and photos from last year’s bald-a-thon.
He writes: “Actually, for a few hours, we had the oldest female shavee in St. Baldrick's history when 74-year-old Lorraine Medding took the chair to honor her late husband and a child she used to babysit. However, later that afternoon in California,an 82-year-old lady claimed that record and will probably hold it for a while.
“Anyway, St. Baldrick's has become the largest volunteer driven event of its kind. The point is to raise funds and to show solidarity with those who have no choice about losing their hair.”
“It really is the ultimate haircut for the ultimate cause. “
So, if you’re in Five Points on Saturday, stop by, say hello to Stacey. And if you’re feeling particularly bold, have a seat.
Last year, Lorraine became the short-term world record holder after uttering this challenge: "I will if ya'll will."
