Sunshine Smith creates her own paradise.

Protector of horses, patroness of agriculture, a warrior and friend - that describes both Athena and Sunshine.

After graduating from USC's art program, Sunshine hopped a bus for Key West. By the early 80s, the former beach hippie had become a single mom struggling to pay bills. Friend Jimmy Buffett suggested they open a t-shirt shop together.

Twenty-two years later, Margaritaville is an internationally-known brand, with Sunshine as its reigning goddess (and the job title "Keeper of the Myth"). Her positive attitude inspired friends to name her "Sunshine."  "When I became Ms. Biz Wiz at Margaritaville, I tried to change it back to Donna, but a caller said ‘where is Sunshine? I like talking to her.'"

When not in Key West, she's back home in South Carolina, growing organic vegetables and riding horses on her farm in Liberty Hill. She and husband Don have restored an old house there and another in Camden - The Thomas House - now a center for yoga, massage, and healing. "I never lack for adventure. My life just happens, unfolding in the most surprising ways, and I love the ride."
