Tea Time

Wednesday, May, 7, 2008

The Blue Hydrangea Tea Party started here in Columbia, to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.  On Saturday,  parties are popping up in New York, Delaware, Arkansas, Illinois, Texas, Michigan, and Kentucky.

teaparty_1.jpgElizabeth Ann McCune and Jennie Camp Hudgins have watched their modest proposal take off.

Their proposal was this:  what if women hosted a tea party and collected small amounts of money for ovarian cancer research.  What if they did it on the Saturday before Mother’s Day.  Just that simple.

They hosted their first party to honor Jennie’s sister, Elizabeth’s mother--Ann Camp McCune--who died of ovarian cancer and loved blue hydrangeas.  That’s where the name of the project came from.

You may remember their story from our December issue.  If not, you can read about them on their website, learn more about parties going on across the country, and find out how to host your own Blue Hydrangea Tea Party.

Also on Saturday, Finleaf, In the Loop and Jot are hosting a party on Devine Street --an afternoon on the lawn with live music, tea-tasting, and arts demonstrations, 11am-2pm.  If you want to drop by, it’s free.
