“I wrote my first song around the age of four,” Hannah says. But it’s only in the last four years that she’s pursued music as a career full-time.
Of her latest songs, collected on Into the Black, she says, “I loved every minute of the three weeks I was in Nashville working on the new record.”
Now she’s touring, writing, and doing all the things a professional musician has to do. “It is tough to keep going some days, and I suppose the reason I do is that I'm convinced this is what I'm supposed to do with my life.”
How will Hannah know she’s succeeded? “Success has two parts, one is the practical, just getting to a point where I'm out of debt and can actually make a little money. The other is getting my songs to people, having them say something someone needed to hear.”

More from Hannah:
On how she works:
Well, I try to spend time every day playing guitar. I always have songs
in process, it seems, but I never know when I'm going to finish one. Rarely do I sit down on purpose to finish a song. It is something I cannot really force.
On what inspires her work:
Different things, sometimes it is my own experience, sometimes I try to
write outside of my own experience. Listening to great music always makes me
antsy to go write something.
On her ultimate playlist:
I love the old school stuff, Simon and Garfunkel, Tom Petty, The Eagles,
old country like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. Everyone should absolutely check out Over the Rhine. I discovered them in early high school, and I think they've definitely influenced me. Their latest record, The Trumpet Child, is great.
